Is hitting the armpit considered as handball? The armpit is considered to be the upper boundary of your arm by the IFAB. If the ball hits any area of your arm below the armpit, it will be considered as a handball. It may be possible that the ball hits your armpit but no handball offence is called. However, this is very hard to determine during the game especially when the game is moving so quickly!

A new rule introduced in 2020 states the upper boundary of the arm is inline with the bottom of the armpit. Any part of the arm below this boundary is considered handball. The rest of this article looks at the offical rule, a change to the handball rule, the so-called “t-shirt sleeve” definition and implications of the arm with the offside rule.

Handball is a foul by which a player’s hand or arm touches the ball. This area of the hand/arm is from under the shoulder to the tip of the finger. It’s legal to use the upper part of the shoulder to touch the ball. However, as with many things in soccer, there is a lot more to the handball rule.

The arm begins at the end of the armpit. In the image below, you can see where it would be a handball if the ball comes into contact with the player and where it would not be a handball. Part of the body that is a handball. For a player to commit a handball offense the ball must touch them on the hand or arm.

Even though we are assuming the player deliberatly directs the ball with his shoulder, I would still say no it's not a handball because the laws state it has to touch his hand or arm and arm≠shoulder. Now where the arm ends and where the shoulder begins is subjective, and that's where your judgement as a ref comes in.

Law 12 states that it is an offence if the hand/arm is above/beyond their shoulder level (unless the player deliberately plays the ball which then touches their hand/arm). There is no room for interpretation or mitigation there, whereas with the Ward one, above, as his arm was not above his shoulder, it allows the referee to consider whether or not it is an expected position.

There is one simple explanation of the handball foul in football. Did the player's hand or arm, from the tips of the fingers to the shoulder, play the ball? And if so, was it done with intent? A ball which is first kicked, and then hits a player's hand or arm, is rarely ruled as ball handling.

Extend the straight diagonal line on both ends. For me, anything to the right and below that line is handball. That diagonal line changes its angle depending on how the arm is held but it always starts from the corner of the armpit. For example it becomes a vertical line from the armpit if the arm is held in a 90 degree angle.

For the purposes of determining handball offences, the upper boundary of the arm is in line with the bottom of the armpit. It is an offence if a player: deliberately touches the ball with their hand/arm, including moving the hand/arm towards the ball.
