Top best answers to the question «Where did handball come from»

The fast-paced modern team game of handball was first played towards the end of the 19th century in Scandinavia and Germany. Field handball was first recognised at the turn of the century, and G. Wallström introduced the sport of "handball" to Sweden in 1910.

One of the oldest of ball games, handball has been traced back to the baths of Rome. Played later as a bare-handed game called pelota in Spain and France, it was the forerunner of modern jai alai. Handball was adapted in the British Isles during the 16th century and called fives (q.v.).

  • Handball was invented by Nicolaj Ernst in 1897 in Nyborg, in Denmark. It is an indoor game played between two teams, containing a total of 7 players each. In the game, the players pass the ball with their hands and try to score by throwing the ball into the goal of the opponent team. Each team contains 6 outfield players and one goalkeeper.
  • Handball has origins from many different countries. By the late 19th century, handball was being played in Germany, Scandinavia, Czech Republic, and Ukraine. The first evidence of handball goes back to long before, however. The women of the Roman Empire played a game similar to handball, which they called expulsim ludere.

Handball has developed from a number of similar games, which were in existence at the start of the 20th century. These games were played in Central and Northern Europe and in 1926 Standard International Rules were established. In 1928 the International Amateur Handball Federation was established by 11 countries during the Summer Olympic Games. This body later became the present International Handball Federation. In the early part of the century Handball was an eleven-a-side game played outdoors on a soccer pitch and indeed this version of the game is still played by 'Veterans' in countries such as Austria and Germany. As the popularity of handball spread throughout Europe, major modifications were being considered in Northern Europe due to the more severe climate. The need for indoor handball became apparent. As an indoor game, handball became faster and more colourful and rapidly grew to become popular throughout Europe. Indoor handball and the outdoor field version enjoyed equal popularity until the late 1960's. In 1965 the Olympic Committee approved indoor handball for the Olympic Games and the name 'Handball' now refers exclusively to the indoors 7-a-side version.
