Widely known as an award-winning country music artist, helping to pioneer that genre for African Americans, Charley Pride (b. 1938) had a baseball career before turning to music. Pride played in the Negro Leagues in the 1950s: some outfield, but he mostly pitched intimidating fastballs, sneaky curves and knuckleballs for teams including the Memphis Red Sox and Birmingham Black Barons.

Pride appeared to be advancing to a career in baseball, but the U.S. Army derailed this. After serving two years in the military, he tried to return to baseball. Though hindered by the injury to his throwing arm, Pride briefly played for the Missoula Timberjacks of the Pioneer League, but was cut.

Charlie Pride: Professional life, Career. By 1954, Pride signed up with the Memphis Red Socks, a Negro League baseball team. Though he was involved in baseball, he found time to improve his musical skills. By 1960, Pride left semi-professional baseball and the American Negro League to play for a C-team.

In 1960 he moved to west-central Montana, where he played minor-league and semiprofessional baseball and performed music in local nightclubs. After a disc jockey in Helena , Montana, introduced Pride to country stars Red Sovine and Red Foley, Pride pursued a publishing and recording contract in Nashville , inspired and encouraged by those two musicians (especially Sovine).

Charley Pride was a pitcher for the Memphis Red Sox briefly in 1953 and then the Birmingham Black Barons in 1954. He was his primarily known for his curveball .
