Watford appoint Slaven Bilic as new head coach after sacking Rob Edwards

Watford have appointed Slaven Bilic as their new head coach after dismissing Rob Edwards from his position.

The club confirmed on their website that the Croatian has penned an 18-month contract at Vicarage Road.

The Hornets signed Edwards after their relegation from the Premier League last season.

The former Wales international had led Forest Green Rovers to League One promotion for the first-time in the club’s history in April. His impressive work at the Rovers landed him the job at the Yellow Army.

However, the 39-year-old only lasted around three months at Watford who are currently 10th in the Championship table.

Edwards made a promising start at Vicarage Road, picking up seven points from the first three matches. However, things went downhill from there as his side registered only a single win from seven games.

He has now been sacked and the Hornets have installed Slaven Bilic as their new head coach.

The club owner Gino Pozzo said in a statement: “As with all decisions taken by the Board, I believe this change to be in the best interests of the club.

“We felt Rob had enough time to show us the identity of his team, however performances haven’t reflected our hopes and ambitions.

“Now we must move forward, and, in Slaven Bilic, we have secured the services of an experienced coach who has recent experience of promotion to the Premier League.”

Watford want an immediate return to the English top-flight and believe Slaven Bilic to be the man to lead them to promotion.

The 54-year-old enjoyed huge success while in charge of Croatia national team between 2006 and 2012. He led his country into the quarter-finals of Euro 2008.

Bilic also has the distinction of guiding West Bromwich Albion to Premier League promotion in the 2019-20 season.

He was most recently in charge of Chinese Super League side Beijing Guoan, which he left in January this year.
