Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz (3/1 â Australian Open 2023 outright) said it was a dream come true after he won the US Open and became the youngest ever menâs world number one.
The 19-year-old has been talked about as a future star of menâs tennis for some time and he has lived up to those expectations already after winning the final Grand Slam of the year in New York.
Alacaraz beat Casper Ruud 6-4 2-6 7-6 6-3 at Flushing Meadows to seal the title in his first major final and with it became the youngest menâs Grand Slam champion since Rafael Nadal won the French Open in 2005.
Heâs also the first teenager to sit atop the ATP rankings and he admits his impressive achievements at such a young age is the stuff of dreams.
âThis is something which I dreamt of since I was a kid, being number one in the world and a champion of a Grand Slam,â said Alcaraz, who saved a match point against Jannik Sinner in the last eight on the way to reaching his first major semi-final.
âIt is something I have worked very hard for. It is really, really special.â
Ruud, 23, would have become the new world number one if he had won, but has now lost both of his two major finals.
Alcaraz replaces Russiaâs Daniil Medvedev as the new world No.1, with his victory denying Ruud the chance to be top of the rankings, as the Norwegian instead had to reflect on his second Grand Slam final defeat â following on from his loss at the French Open earlier this year.
Ruud, who moves up to second in the world and who is 20/1 to win the Australian Open next year, admitted the final turned against him in the third set when he lost the tie-break and he struggled to recover.
He said: âI played a horrible tie-break, unfortunately too many mistakes. I guess I couldnât get those set points out of my head. It was unfortunate.â
