The NHL DFS slate for 12/12 hands us a very manageable 6 games. Each game carries at least a 6 O/U in Vegas, with four carrying a 6.5 total. We should see some scoring!
Letâs look at the players we should focus on, and who we might pair with them from other teams.
We have lots of great options for correlating in tournaments, value plays for cash games, and overall ceiling plays that can break a slate. Letâs analyze some of the best plays offered by optimizers for todayâs slate on either Draftkings or Fanduel. And, our VIPs can head into our hockey forums to discuss sensible, strategic pivots if these plays look vulnerable.
For more detailed analysis, our Domination Station Optimizer is loaded with both player and ownership projections. And, our NHL Cheatsheets deliver tournament-winning leverage plays from our other NHL coaches in addition to this quick-hitting slate starter.
Defense â Thomas Chabot (OTT)
Defense can be punted, but your power play quarterbacks typically carry huge floors. Names like Roman Josi, John Carlson, Cale Makar often make these lists, but tonight we turn to Thomas Chabot of the Ottawa Senators. Picking on the Anaheim Ducks is a thing. The Ducksâ defense is allowing 4.0 goals per game over three weeks. Ottawa has a lot of cheaper NHL DFS players right now, and Chabot gives you solid exposure to all of them. Chabot is offensive-minded and active lately (33 shots + blocks in L10 games) with goals in three of his last four games and points in four of his last five. And Chabot costs $2000 less on Fanduel tonight than Roman Josi (where most people will turn).
Wing â Matt Duchene (NSH)
Nashville draws the St. Louis Blues tonight, and STL has quickly vaulted to the top of the list in terms of goals against lately. They make Anaheim look like the 1985 Chicago Bears. Goals come in bunches vs STL and opponents are pouring it on. STL might get right someday, but until we see it, we need to target Predators tonight. Matt Duchene offers a reasonable salary and the most consistent game log outside of lead defenseman Roman Josi (who is a great start if you have the salary). Duchene has scored 10+ fantasy points in all but three of his last ten games. He is currently on your top line and top power play as a result of his production. Should STL collapse again tonight, Duchene is probably paying off his salary with ease, and he might be pushing his 25 pt ceiling for you.
Goalie â Cam Talbot (OTT)
Keep an eye on your news, but currently, Talbot is the probable goalie. And, again, facing Anaheim is a good spot to target. Optimizers love cheaper goalies due to their volatility (donât let touts saying âgoalie is most predictive and highest floor positionâ mislead youâŚboth are true statements, but goalie is still volatile as hell). Talbot is an easy play here facing less danger than Saros (NSH), Jarry (PIT), or even Jake Allen (MTL). If you want the safer approach for MME contests, ping-pong Talbot with Gibson some and lock up that win no matter the outcome of that game. In his last game facing ANA, Talbot stopped 31 of 32 shots for 32.8 FD fpts and 4.3x value for his salary at the timeâŚ.the matchup is there.
Wing â Vladimir Tarasenko (STL)
Tara9191 can be an absolute slate-breaker, but he hasnât been yet this year. Tonight is a night where optimizers are loving both sides of this Nashville @ St. Louis matchup, and we could very well see a shootout. If that shootout transpires, Iâm going to want the potent STL2 line of Thomas, Kyrou and Tarasenko. The firepower this NHL DFS skating line possesses is really strong for a total salary for the stack of $15,400. Compare to Edmontonâs McDavid, Draisaitl and Hyman ($29,100) and the top EDM line has to do twice as much tonight to pay off in a matchup that certainly isnât any softer than Tarasenko and the Bluesâ. EDM can, but STL has the higher ceiling due to the cheap price points.
NHL DFS Stacks for Tonight
Ottawa appears to lead the way for stacks tonight facing those Anaheim Ducks. Remember, stacking a skating line is great, including a defenseman can be incredible, but if the line you stack is crushing to the point of positioning you for a gpp winner, that goalie is likely putting up points, too. Donât leave Cam Talbot out of your tourney stacks when you use the Senators. His 30+ points are on the table.
Stacking that 2nd line of STL looks odd at home (we prefer 2nd lines on the road, typically), but this line has the firepower to compete with a huge, chalky line like EDM1 on a dollar for dollar basis. In a 6.5 total game for far cheaper pricing, you might get both STL and EDM together if you donât pair STL with NSH in the single-game shootout scenario.
Another interesting stack option the optimizers are picking up on flies across the slate to the Pittsburgh Penguins. I donât know what the optimizers see in the matchup because DAL isnât allowing a ton of goals and PIT isnât scoring a ton right now. The matchup feels flat and mediocre, especially considering how expensive PIT can be with Crosby/Malkin combos. The optimizers are targeting the $4400 salary of Kris Letang, and usually I can get on board. However, Letang has missed time recently, and hasnât produced even before missing time like he traditionally produces.  My opinion is that the optimizers/projections in the industry are putting too much weight on historical production and the over $1000 recent price drop. This causes the fpt/$ to spike sending the optimizers into ecstasy over what is really just a very mediocre play. Let themâŚ.focus elsewhere.
