Bushings are a very important part of skateboard trucks. Every truck is equipped with two bushings – the street-facing top bushing, and the board-facing bottom bushing. Like skateboard wheels, bushings are made of polyurethane, i.e. plastic. Bushings are available in many different colours, shapes, and degrees of hardness.
Put the wheel onto the truck of the skateboard and press down on the wheel to press the bearing into place. Put the bearing spacer inside the wheel on the other side. Repeat the process to press the second bearing into place. Repeat for the other wheels. Replace the wheel washers and nut, making sure they are secure.
Bushings come in pairs. The top bushing on your skateboard truck makes your board turn, the bottom bushing can be adjusted by tightening or loosening the nut to make adjust responsiveness. Loose means better turning but less stability (especially at high speeds) and tight mean more stability but less responsiveness.
The hanger holds the axle nuts, which keep the wheels affixed to your skateboard. Bushings allow your trucks to turn, with harder bushings offering stiffer movement, and softer bushings more sensitive to pressure. Kingpins (the bolts that connect the hanger to the base plate) can alter the height of your trucks.
Baseplate – Most notable change in riding when switched. There’s a few more parts to complete the anatomy diagram: Kingpin – Holds bushings/hanger together and provides pivot point Pivot – Where nub of hanger fits into baseplate. These parts of the board work together to provide the rider with the most customization possible for longboarding.
